Prunus serrulaI love this small garden tree – Prunus serrula is perfect in every way for a small urban garden, which is exactly where I planted it earlier this year for clients in Walthamstow. Celebrated for its magnificant peeling cinammon coloured bark which glows with sunlight upon its trunk. A light, open canopy with good autumn colours, most prized is the bark which you can delight in all year round – plant it close to a seated area or pathway so that you can touch its beautiful shiny trunk.

In this planting scheme I used a warm colour palette which worked very well with the contrasting white rendered wall and cedar panelling. The orange and yellow colours in the crocosmia and lilies really make this a zingy plant combo.

A beautiful, small form ornamental tree that works in all sorts of gardens. Now is the time to get planting your garden trees.. buying bare root at this time of year means you can plant during its dormant period too and as bare root plants tend to be cheaper than buying pot grown plants, why not treat yourself to more than one..

Happy gardening!
