What a fortunate Gardener I am, I have a Pagan Witch as a client and she lives at the top of a hill. She is knowledgeable about nature and very in touch with all the seasons, we have been working together to develop her garden into a space that she can feel comfortable to practice her Pagan rituals in privacy with planted seclusion.
The garden is on an exposed site which is surrounded by fantastic Essex countryside.. we were admiring the view just yesterday when I was preparing the soil for backdrop planting of a Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) hedge to give the garden a green boundary. Unfortunately, the garden is overlooked by neighbours to two sides and so I needed to incorporate screening at some height to get away from that ‘goldfish bowl’ feeling. It’s extremely exposed up in the vertical space, so cutting into the upright will help bring the garden closer. I am creating a green division between the first part of the garden and the rear concreted area, which won’t be tackled for some time yet.
Laurel puts on good growth, roughly at least 0.3 metres a year and they provide great shade too, this was another reason for choosing this plant as the garden has a south-facing aspect which makes the garden very hot. This shade will be very welcome and form the backdrop to a Dingly Dell that I’m devising for the garden.. this one is going to be a ‘Jewel bedecked Dingly Dell’ and I don’t know who is more excited about this stage of the garden development, me or my client..!
