When gardens and home gardeners find themselves in need of some change or inspiration, I recommend a new planting scheme, especially when finances are pinched and so a complete make-over is out of the question.
Planting schemes are a great way to tackle your garden, in bite-size pieces, one area at a time. It’s very important to look at any plants currently in situ to note how they’ve done and whether in honesty, they’ve served their time and need to ‘move on’ as it were. I work with the garden’s aspect, soil type and preferred style, keeping the feel but adding dynamics through planting that can bring flowers, purfume, different leaf forms, coloured stems and berries.
My clients’ wishes are at the heart of what I do, and I combine this with my knowledge of plants to bring new species into the gardens that have not been formerly known. I love the excitement that a new planting scheme brings, full of anticipation for how the garden will look, be appreciated and used in new and different ways. Bringing back sometimes a long forgotten relationship with it and a new one that keeps us in our present, full of hope and endless possibilities.
I am a disciple of Graham Stuart Thomas and keep a very treasured copy of ‘Colour in the winter garden’ close to hand to make sure each and every garden I develop has jewels across all four seasons. Client’s have commented on how much wildlife they have noticed feeding on the newly planted flora, which is brilliant. Planting for the welfare of local wildlife within the garden brings a great deal of pleasure and relationship to it.
